Several years ago, the daughter of Raymond Gage Winslett, Beth Fontenot, contacted the Visual Art Department to see if we would be interested in a printing machine and supportive materials that her father owned and used as a hobby. We were delighted to add this equipment as a piece of printing history to the printmaking area in the Visual Arts Department.
Raymond Gage Winslett's experience in printing and journalism began at the age of 17 when he went to work for a Methodist preacher in Quitman, Mississippi who owned a printing, office supply, and stationary business.
Here are several of Mr. Winslett’s achievments: After years in the Navy, Raymond returned to Quitman to pursue his interest in printing. A year later Mr. Winslett was accepted to the Southern School of Printing in Nashville and eventually pursued a degree in journalism at Louisiana Tech. After graduation he was employed by The Conservation News out of Jackson, Mississippi. In 1949, Raymond bought a small weekly newspaper in Ringgold, Louisiana where he handset large type for headlines and advertisements.
Mr. Winslett was also a poet and self-published several books of poetry.
Raymond purchased a desktop platen press, created for hobbyists, and used it to print small items such as stationary and business cards for friends and family.
Beth Fontenot, a faculty member at McNeese, is the Director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics in the Department of Nutrition and Family Studies.
We at the art department want to thank Beth Fontenot for donating this press to us and will remind students where this came from and the love Raymond Gage Winslett had for printing.
